As part of a small but dynamic design team, a Senior Level Game Designer at Coatsink is responsible for designing and maintaining the design of a game, ensuring that the game’s content is built closely to that design and to a defined high standard.
The Senior Game Designer will communicate primarily with the Design Manager, design team and with seniors from other disciplines, to ensure the whole team understands the project’s design, as well as progress. The Senior Game Designer will support the Design Manager in providing coaching and mentoring support to more junior and/or less experienced members of the design team and to promote the working culture and values of Coatsink in all their interactions.
The Senior Game Designer may be required to adopt the role of “Design lead” on a project, wherein they will manage a team of designers for up to the life of that project to develop the game’s design and creative vision to a high standard of completion.
Role and key responsibilities
- Creating and updating the design of a game to achieve the project’s core pillars
- Assisting the Lead Designer by taking ownership of features, and championing the project’s design direction, both internally and externally
- Keeping all members of the team up to date on the project’s design and progress
- When required, managing a team of designers on a project, prioritising tasks and streamlining development processes
- Supporting and coaching less experienced members of the design team
- Working, planning and communicating with team leads and the Design Manager to ensure the development team have the resources needed to build the game
- Assisting the Lead Designer in reviewing all design work to ensure it meets the project’s design
- Ensuring all design documentation is kept organised and up to date
- Communicating with external collaborators on a project to keep them up to date on the project’s design
- Creating and maintaining design documentation, including feature specification and implementation guidelines
- Helping to organise and encouraging the rest of the team to participate in regular team ‘show and tell’ meetings, to share information, learn and collaborate on problem solving
- Develop prototypes and explore new game ideas
- Participate in research and development exercises.
- Participate to market studies and propose new game concepts/ideas
- Undertake any other reasonable assigned duty, that is line with postholders skills, knowledge and ability
Skills and main qualifications
Qualifications
- Relevant university degree or a strong up to date project portfolio
- May have additional postgraduate, management or continuing professional development CPD qualifications
Experience
- At least 4 years’ experience working in a game design role
- Several titles shipped while working in a game design role
- Significant experience in a Designer role on a released unity-based game
- Significant Unity experience
- Substantial experience using Atlassian software (Jira, Confluence etc)
- Experience leading a team on a released title and supporting and coaching less experienced team members
- Significant experience working within a variety of project management methodologies, such as SCRUM
- Some experience of developing for VR, significant experience would be ideal

- Competent art / graphic design skills to help elevate design documentation and get ideas across
- Highly developed communication skills
- Competent IT skills
- The ability to lead, impart information, encourage and support junior or less experienced members of the team
Knowledge
- Very thorough and expansive understanding of level design, UX design, and game design fundamentals
- Very thorough understanding of games market and target audience
- Competent practical knowledge of scripting or visual scripting
Aptitude
- Skilled in working in both small and large teams
- Adept at adapting quickly to changes and new problems
- Adept at taking and seeking out constructive criticism and using it to improve designs and workflows
- Strong passion for playing video games across a wide variety of genres and advanced analysis of what makes them good/bad
