As a Technical Artist you’ll be creative, driven, and a problem solver. You will be working within a team to address the technical challenges faced with achieving the performance and look of our games. You will play an essential role in establishing best technical practices to develop our tools, pipelines and systems. We expect you to be a bridge between the Artists, Programmers, and often other departments, ensuring art assets can be easily integrated into the game without sacrificing the artistic vision or exceeding the platform’s technical limits.
Role and key responsibilities
- Acting as a bridge between the Artists and Programmers. - Work with your Art Director and leads to research techniques, tools and provide solutions to visual challenges. - Work alongside programming to develop tools, scripts, pipelines and workflows, and communicating this within the wider technical and art team, where appropriate. - Quick and effective in prototyping, and visually demonstrating ideas. - Be involved in pre-production to help plan and workaround any hardware limitations and constraints.
Skills and main qualifications
Required - Relevant degree or equivalent education and training - Good knowledge of one scripting language: Python, C# or Maxscript preferred. - Good knowledge of node-based shader authoring. - Knowledge of 3D Maths (Vectors, Matrices). - Ability to communicate cross-discipline and drive improvement across the studio. - Good knowledge of graphics rendering pipelines and pipeline development. - Good knowledge of performance implications of game art creation and general technical concepts related to game art. - Experience with profiling game content to diagnose performance issues. - Experience with optimising game content based on own knowledge. - Knowledge of the 3D Unity pipeline. - A strong specialism in one area of games art (Modelling, Animation, VFX, Lighting, Shaders). - Knowledge of shader programming (HLSL/CG). Preferred/ Desirable Experience - 1+ shipped title - 2+ years of games industry experience - Additional scripting languages.­ - Experience with code based shader authoring (HLSL/CG). - Experience with node or script based gameplay implementation. Required personal skills and approach - Ability to interact and communicate across all disciplines and with colleagues effectively. - Strong problem solving skills. - An interest in traditional and digital art with an eye for artistic flair and stylised visuals.
