The Power of Ethical Games
Information
Video games are played and loved by over one-third of the world's population. This appeal reflects the ability to interact within an interactive art form. However, games are about playing within certain rules defined by game designers; not the players. This talk argues that the game industry should also evolve within certain ethical rules to ensure that our art form can continue to flourish and simultaneously protect both players (from disruptive behavior in multiplayer games to predatory monetization practices) and industry employees (from online harassment to provide a safe and inclusive workplace). When players and industry workers are protected and respected, video game businesses can thrive. For example, player retention is found higher in online games that address disruptive behaviors. Celia Hodent, PhD in Psychology and game UX Strategist, will explain why developing a code of ethics is a necessary investment for the future of the industry and how the Ethical Games initiative that she leads is preparing such a code.
