Black Quare Game Studies: A New Approach to Gaming Education
Information
The divide between theory and practice in video game education has led to an industry that prioritizes technical skills and profit-driven production over artistic expression, cultural representation, and community-centered design–a capitalist monster of creation. This talk introduces a transformative and combative educational framework against this that integrates Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Quare theory into gaming studies, offering an alternative pedagogical approach that centers lived experiences and identity-driven game design. Drawing inspiration from movements in film education, particularly the LA Rebellion and the New Queer Cinema movement this approach fosters a space where marginalized voices shape the future of gaming through self-expressive, socially impactful design.
